Semana mundial de oración

Prisioneros de la esperanza

This year’s Global Week of Prayer was based on the theme Prisoners of Hope. The book of Zechariah talks about a faithful God looking out for His people - a people who have turned away, focussed on their own situation, broken the covenant, and had a certain disregard for building God’s dwelling place. Yet, the Lord of Hosts, invites His people back to Himself - as prisoners of hope!

Throughout the week, people form SU movements around the world used the Prayer Guide as an aid to pray. As we looked at the different themes of repentance, reliance, renewal, restoration, and rejoicing, it helped us to focus on hope in a year, when globally hope has been needed more than ever before!

We started the week with a Launch Event. This was based on the same themes as the Prayer Guide. It was refreshing to watch video clips of children reading through different sections of Zechariah whilst building Lego models, sharing their stories of relying on God, and leading us in times of rejoicing. We also heard from one of our key SU people who was restored - not just from Covid-19, but also from a major injustice he had faced this year.

We introduced Prayer Rooms this year, daily catering to a different time zone. We are grateful to SU Scotland, SU Uganda, SU Guatemala and SU’s Francophone movements who led these each day. It was good to have exclusive Spanish and French prayer rooms where the Latin American and French-speaking brothers and sisters prayed for those around the SU Global Family.

The week was concluded with a 24-hour Prayer Event, which had 340 registrations. We saw over 40 SU National Movements lead the SU Global Family in segments of 30 minutes of prayer. From some beautiful sung worship led by SU Estonia, to sharing about SU Kenya’s focus on mental health, to using SU Australia's ‘Starting Out’ resource - this was truly a global wave of prayer! We started in a wet New Zealand and finished in Tonga. We prayed in Ukrainian, French, Spanish, Sinhala, Tamil, Afrikaans, Russian, and English. A few themes that were repeated were countries in conflict, upcoming elections in several nations, children and young people’s mental health, churches, and the response of SU as the pandemic begins to wane in parts of the world.

We would like to thank each of you who participated, prepared, presented, led prayers, and shared inspiring testimonies and stories of hope! It was incredible to see young and old, Global North and Global South and everyone in between come together to repent, rely, renew, restore, and rejoice. We begin the journey together of being prisoners of hope!
